College Footbal weekend wrap-up

First day of college football is back in effect, let’s give it a recap:

1. O.U. lost and the ags and horns won.

2. The Sooners lost their Heisman winning quarterback today for the week with an injured shoulder. I hope seriously that this affects Sam Bradford’s chance of getting a repeat heisman. He’s just not that good!

3. The Georgia dome is by far one of the most underrated places to play. I think that every school in the major BCS conferences should have to play at least one neutal site game.

4. LeGarrett Blount of oregon was kicked off of the team for his post game fight angainst Boise State on friday night. I would have to say that I agree with the decision.

5. Louisiana-Monroe, Charleston Southern, and Jacksonville Stateost by a total of 118 points today. Ouch!

Back in action!

So as you can see we are back into the swing of things! There has definately been a lack of content for my five readers and that is definately not due too not caring about blogging.

I guess the best way for me to fully explain the last few months is to give you a non-sequential breakdown of what’s going on with my family.

1. My father passed away on August 23, 2009. I am still not completely ready to talk about it but it’s better that dad isn’t suffering now. He was a great man and we were blessed to get to know him. I think that was evident In the attendance at his funeral.

2. The baby and corrie are now at 36 weeks. I am totally excited and nervous at the same time. Please know in advance that you are welcome to come visit us in the hospital. We have multiple friends who have had their bab or will be havin their baby near our delivery date. It’s been grat to move into this new area of our life. We were so blessed to get to some many awesome gifts at the baby showers.

3. My birthday was August 30 and we got to celebrate it with family at the cheesecake factory. My family in typical fashion threw in enough money for me to justify to Corrie to purchase an iPod touch, which by the way I am typing on rift now with almost no slow time compare to typing on a keyboard.

4. School is kicking my butt! I layed out of school on the first week solely to get myself emotionally available to come back. My RPE family was so encouraging to me! However bein out that long definately put me behind the curve on getting school year rolling.

5. I’m efforting to lose weight. I’m at a rathe hefty weight rift now (I blame it on Pregnancy sympathy weight). When I got the iPod touch I downloaded an app that allows me the oportunity to easily count my calories. If I stay on track I should lose about sixty pounds In 26 weeks.

6. Grad school was a tough decision to lay out one class in order to get myself straight to be able to finish up. Howeve I am still on track to graduate in the winter!

Okay I’ve done enough talking what’s going on with you?

G.I. Joe Review

Corrie was out of town on a girls get-a-way in San Marcos so I opted to go to see a movie tonight. Tonight’s movie of choice?  The new G.I. Joe movie.

Is it Similar? First off the movie is not a direct adaptation of the 1980’s thru early 90’s cartoon version. Most of the characters are present in the movie that were in the cartoons, but they have had small adaptation. Perhaps the most noticeable difference is that G.I. Joe is not “real American heroes” but rather global heroes. Members of the G.I. Joe squad are from all over the world and the G.I. Joe program is a complete work together of  30-50 different countries. All, top secret of course.

How is the Acting? The acting is decent. Channing Tatum is of course the main character of the movie and he delivers as the hero, but it’s hard to shake his job on his “Stop-Loss” movie he did a few years ago. He’s a good soldier and is very convincable in his role. Another character, Heavy Duty, played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje looks entirely like Mr. Eko from “Lost” but is not. Trust me, if your a lost fan, you’ll think the same thing. Is their any Oscar award winning acting in this movie, definately not.

What about the action/gore/language? The movie was rated PG-13, and in my opinion that was a lucky rating. The s-word is blurted out a couple of times.  God’s name is misused half-a-dozen times or more, with Jesus’ name abused once. The movie had a lot of fight scenes within it naturally, and while they did do a considerable amount effort to make sure that when someone was killed that you didn’t exactly see how it happened directly, the implication was still there. To me they did as best they could to make sure that it wasn’t too gorey, but they would turn around and have scenes where the Joe’s would strike a sword into some bad guy’s metal mask through the eye whole.

Does the movie deliver? Like Transformers 2 earlier this summer, G.I. Joes delivers if you are looking for an interesting, unlikely, non-realistic story full of cinematic blow-up chalked full of CGI, then this is your movie! However if you are looking for the Denzel Washington acting type of movie that makes you think then you’ll find G.I. Joes a little too childish.

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July! We here at Theportiers.com (which is just Corrie and I, and the baby-to-come) want to wish you a day full of fellowship with other people as we rejoice in living in a country that gives us the freedom to do so. I don’t have a rabble rousing speech to give you on this day, but as we remember our armed forces that are serving over seas in a justified war, I want to give you this youtube video. In 1976, two guys jumped out on the field at Dodgers Stadium to try to set fire a U.S. Flag. Outfielder Rick Monday swooped in just before they got it lit and took the flag away from the two traitors. I think it’s been voted one of the 20 best moments in baseball ever and justifiably so.

My tribute to Micheal Jackson

I mean, I know that every network is doing all MJ, all day. Especially MTV from what I’ve heard (I’ve been strangely absent from TV the last few days.) However, I do recognize that MJ was talented. Most though who are my age remember him doing we are the world and black and white and then going into multiple levels of McSteamy plastic surgery followed up by dangling kids off balconies and being a pedophile.

However if you put aside whacko jacko and think about the talent of the artist, he does deserve some merit. Not much, though.
Here’s my vain attempt and it comes in the effects of one of my favorite artist, Jason Mraz. In March 2008, on tour in the Netherlands, Mraz was doing a radio station gig. He got to pair up with the Dutch version of the American Idol and performed “Billie Jean.”

Not a good week to be a celebrity…

So it’s been a tough week or so for celebrities. They are dropping like flies.

Let’s recap.
Ed

Ed McMahon

A permant sidekick for Johnny Carson on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” McMahon died on Tuesday at age 86.

Micheal Jackson

Jackson died in his Bellaire home in California earlier last week. Details emerging from Los Angeles yesterday revealed that double dos-age of painkiller drugs might have been inadvertently administered on him at short intervals by a nurse and later, a doctor.

Just like his life, his death might be just as much a mystery or controversy as well.

He was 50 at his death.

Farrah Fawcett

TV Icon Farrah Fawcett died this past week after a 2 year battle with the rare disease of  anal cancer. Farrah actually was a hometown product of Corpus Christi, so this death this week  kind of was the one that caught my eye.

She was 62 at her death.

Billy Mays

Billy was the known pitchman for several different products. I think even at his death he had a show going on TLC where they chronicalled his life. Mays is suspected to have died of natural causes this morning.

He was 50 at his death.
